FBI conducts search at Trump critic John Bolton’s home and office as part of resumed national security investigation

Image
The FBI conducted a court-authorized search at former national security adviser John Bolton’s home and office as part of a renewed investigation into whether he disclosed classified information in his 2020 book, according to two people familiar with the matter. The investigative step immediately drew criticism that Trump was using the muscle of the US government to target a political foe, though the specific basis for the searches was not clear. Bolton served as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser in his first term 2019, but the president fired him and the two have been at odds ever since. Trump had previously threatened to jail for Bolton over the 2020 book, which was critical of Trump’s foreign policy knowledge, and the Justice Department investigated him in Trump’s first-term. That probe was closed under President Joe Biden personnel at Bolton’s house in the Washington, DC, area on Friday morning. They were seen speaking to a person on the porch of the ho...

Hurricane Erin to churn up life-threatening surf and rip currents along US East Coast and Bermuda

After exploding in strength at a historic rate this weekend, Hurricane Erin is now a sprawling Category 4 storm churning in the Atlantic. The storm’s enormous footprint is becoming the biggest concern as it threatens to drive life-threatening rip currents and towering waves toward the eastern US coastline and Bermuda. The storm is forecast to stay well offshore, but its expansive wind field is already sending large swells outward for hundreds of miles, bringing dangerous rip currents to US shores as the storm prepares to move north.Erin’s outer rain bands have lashed Puerto Rico, triggering flash flooding and power outages, and started impacting the southeast Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands early Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Large swells from the hurricane will reach much of the East Coast and Bermuda starting Tuesday, with conditions expected to worsen through midweek. Even though Erin is expected to remain far offshore, the threat to life from r...

Putin’s wins leave Trump with hard choice

Image
Russian President Vladimir Putin got everything he could have hoped for in Alaska. President Donald Trump got very little — judging by his own pre-summit metrics. The question now is whether Trump secured any moderate gains or planted seeds for Ukraine’s future security if there’s an eventual peace deal with Russia that were not immediately obvious after obvious after Friday’s summit. And he’s left with some searing strategic questions.Despite Trump’s claim to have made “a lot of progress” and that the summit was a “10 out of 10,” all signs point to a huge win for the Russian autocrat. Trump’s lavish stage production of Putin’s arrival Friday, with near-simultaneous exits from presidential jets and red-carpet strolls, provided some image rehabilitation for a leader who is a pariah in the rest of the West and who is accused of war crimes in Ukraine. And by the end of their meeting, Trump had offered a massive concession to his visitor by adopting the Russian position t...
